5G, for example, is praised for its better energy efficiency but is used to transmit more data. Finally, technologies linked to the metaverse seem to distance us from reality and therefore sometimes also from its problems. The prism of action is then shifted, and while we think we are providing a solution, we only accentuate the problem. The many concerns surrounding the development of a responsible metaverse go beyond the question of technology as a solution to environmental issues. They raise the need to change our view of innovation and technology.

This is the concept developed by frugal innovation, which is based on the principle that we can do “better with less”, that is, relying on strong constraints and scarce resources to be innovative.
