Politics and polarization

Post by Bappy11 »

Once social media has grabbed your attention, the ball starts rolling. The algorithm determines what you are presented with and when they can best disturb you with which advertisements. Are you most likely to click on an advertisement after seeing two videos and five photos? Then that is the moment. And this is just a simple example. With AI, the predictions of what makes you stop scrolling are becoming increasingly detailed.

We now know that Google 'completes' your questions based on your location and your search history. But social media channels do this too. Based on much more data. Do you lose your attention on the platform? Then they show you a country email list photo of your ex with new partner. Are you, according to the platform, susceptible to fake news (does this make you stop scrolling)? Then you will see this more often. Every timeline is unique.

In the documentary they also discuss the further 'growing apart' of the Republicans and Democrats in the US. It was stated that, as a result of the 'facts' that each party believes in, the space for debate or constructive conversations has been reduced. This can be done, for example, by putting certain people in a pool and providing one-sided information. This can reinforce opinions.

That these algorithms are causing left and right parties to become increasingly fierce towards each other is quite disturbing. These algorithms can manipulate your opinion without you noticing.
