TOc2ality, the TikTok-native digital medium dedicated to “translating newspapers” that has revolutionized the way new generations consume news, has reached a major milestone: it has managed to surpass 5 million followers on TikTok . This consolidates its position as a leader in the digital news landscape, thanks to its innovative format, its simple and friendly language, together with its dynamic approach.
But, beyond having managed to become the most followed turkey number data Spanish media on TikTok, Ac2ality has made its way into the European ranking by being the first Spanish media on TikTok, only behind other international media, such as Daily Mail, Sky News or BBC.
An idea that emerged at the UN
Founded in 2020 by entrepreneurs María Murillo, Gabriela Campbell, Daniela McArena Álvarez and Paula Muñoz , Ac2ality was born with a very clear mission: to bring current events to new audiences in a fresh, entertaining and unbiased way . In this way, they created their signature format 'five key things you need to know today', which summarizes five key things in the news in one minute, and of which they publish six stories a day in Spanish.
When Ac2ality was taking its first steps, Daniela McArena , one of the founders of this medium, gave us an interview in which she told how she came up with the idea of a new medium that would explain current news in a simple way. « The idea actually came to me at the UN , where I did an internship. There we had to make summaries of everything that was happening and give them to the diplomats. There were topics that I couldn't understand, even by reading newspaper articles. Then I thought: I wish there was a newspaper where all the news was outlined with drawings and with easier vocabulary. The new generations want things to be simpler, more direct and the less effort, the better. They prefer to watch videos on YouTube than read news , » explained McArena .
The team claims that their success was due, firstly, to the fact that they had no competition, and also to the fact that they knew how to combine source images with simple and more accessible language. As one of the founders, Gabriela Campbell Gomez, says , “ Young people want to understand what is happening in the world. But even if the BBC was doing something similar, young people could not fully understand what they were publishing.”
