Search engines help people find your content. But to do that, they need to understand it properly. I may be wrong, but I feel like the "understanding" aspect is under-emphasized in the various definitions of SEO.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) "helps search engines better discover and understand your content". "Optimization" is not only about "finding" your content, but also about "understanding" it.
