A collaboration between Norwegian oil and gas giant Statoil and technology company Kongsberg Maritime has created the Eelume robot snake, designed to service and repair various mechanisms underwater. The new technology will significantly reduce operating costs for servicing structures located on the seabed.

Joint research between scientists from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and the Scandinavian Independent Research Organisation (SINTEF) in the field of robotics has been carried out for ten years.

Eelume should significantly reduce the costs of using large and expensive underwater vehicles. In addition, due to its shape and size, Eelume can reach parts that existing mechanisms cannot.

The robot will be permanently located on the seabed and will work around the clock to perform scheduled and urgent maintenance and repair work on equipment. Eelume can be used on both existing and new structures that require constant monitoring, cleaning and various minor maintenance work, such as tightening valves.
