Any other company would use this to distract from their south african whatsapp numbers core business. But at Google , everything is connected. AI is at the very end of machine learning, where people create software that can learn about the world. Google is one of the largest corporate sponsors of AI. It has invested in video, speech, translation, and most recently, search .

Over the past few months, “a very large portion” of the millions of searches per second have been interpreted by an intelligent system called RankBrain , said Greg Corrado, senior search scientist, in a first foray into the role of AI in search .

RankBrain uses AI to reduce vast amounts of written language into mathematical units, called vectors, that a computer can understand. If RankBrain sees a word or phrase it doesn’t know, it can use its AI to guess words and phrases that have similar meanings and filter the results accordingly. This is a much more efficient way to deal with new queries.

RankBrain helps Mountain View handle the 15% of queries that the system previously didn’t recognize, says Greg Corrado . For example, it excels at ambiguous queries like, “What’s the name of the consumer at the top of the food chain?” The way RankBrain uses AI is different than other search engine technologies .

Other systems were based on discoveries and observations that people had while searching for information, but there was no science involved.

Maintaining an edge in search, and continually improving the system to handle ambiguous and more complex queries, is Google’s goal. It’s also about winning and retaining users who are very time-sensitive when searching for information on mobile devices . It’s about a simple association: Google = search.
