2018 is on the home stretch. The two most popular search engines in Russia have been surprising us all year long – multi-colored site labels in Yandex results, Google updates that unexpectedly break results, new services and technologies based on artificial intelligence. Let's sum it up: what new things search engines presented us with over the past year and how this affected website promotion.

What's new at Yandex
Yandex has been steadily updating its algorithms: Arzamas telegram db search in 2009, Reykjavik in 2011, Multi-armed Bandit in 2015, Palekh in 2016, Korolev in 2017. More than a year has passed since the last major innovation, and on November 19, Yandex presented Andromeda.

According to Yandex representatives, Andromeda includes all the changes that occurred in 2018. More than a thousand improvements have been grouped into three main areas for convenience:

quick answers,
ease of choice,
collections.
Let's take a closer look at the innovations of each block.

Interactive Quick Answers
After the November update, Yandex search not only answers questions, but also solves many problems: it helps you choose a performance, find a nearby cafe, tells you the score of your favorite sports team, and much more.


Photos, videos, prices, attendance data, reviews, ratings, etc. will help you decide on a place.


Chats with the company
Another Yandex update makes it easier to get answers: chats in search results. If we ask a more complex question than “coffee shop nearby,” Yandex offers us to enter into a dialogue with a specialized organization.


If you are a website owner and want users to be able to ask you a question directly from Search, create a chat with your organization on the Yandex.Dialogs service. To do this, log in to the service using the login for which the rights to your website are confirmed in Yandex.Webmaster, and follow the instructions.

Yandex.Experts
Yandex has provided for situations when we need not a clear answer, but rather a discussion or expert advice. In the Yandex.Experts service, you can ask any question and get an answer from a specialist: a director, analyst, lawyer, trainer, doctor, etc. The answers of experts are integrated with Search, so we can see them right on the search results page.


If you are an expert in a certain field and have something to share with the world, you can use Yandex.Experts as an additional channel for promoting your services. Next to the specialist's name, there is an option to put a link to a personal page on social networks, a blog or a website. Users rate answers using the Like button. The more useful and popular your answer is, the more people will see it and, possibly, go to your resource.

Signs for websites
Over the past year, Yandex has learned to automatically read the most important characteristics of sites and take them into account in ranking. These include:

website usability,
the ratio of useful and selling information,
permanent audience of the resource,
index when compared pairwise with other sites.
To make the results of this analysis visible to users, Yandex began to mark sites in search results with special symbols.


The blue check mark “Information confirmed by the owner” is given to official websites based on Yandex.Directory data, official dealer websites based on Avto.ru data, financial institution websites based on the Central Bank of the Russian Federation data, etc.

The second label – “Popular Site” is assigned to resources with high traffic and a regular audience, for example YouTube.

The algorithm awards the "Users' Choice" badge to niche sites that have an active audience.

How to get Yandex tags?

To get the "Information verified by owner" badge, confirm your rights to your organization, check the information about it in the Directory and add at least three photos. For the "Popular site" and "User choice" badges, Yandex.Webmaster has a special tool that evaluates the current level of the site's indicators. Yandex also gives recommendations there, for example: how to increase site traffic in order to ultimately receive the "Popular site" badge.


To get your site labeled as a “User’s Choice,” you need to improve behavioral metrics: bounce rate, browsing depth, time on site.
