The first announcement that Google was moving away from algorithms that typically focused on desktop-first versus mobile-first came in 2016 .
At the time, Google said:
Today, most people search on Google using a mobile device. However, our ranking systems typically look at the desktop version of a page's content to assess relevance to the user. This can cause problems when the mobile page has less content than the desktop page because our algorithms aren't evaluating the actual page that a mobile user sees.

By March 2021 , Google will have switched ALL websites from desktop to mobile indexing, having gone through a transition period since their systems recognized they were ready to do so.
Every new website launched after July 2019 was automatically indexed for mobile-first, although some sites have not yet made the move.
