The end of long checkout lines is upon us. In the new cashier-free supermarkets, customers no longer have to queue to pay and can simply walk out of the store thanks to sensors and artificial intelligence. Rewe recently started offering its customers in Cologne the new technology. But are customers ready for it? We investigated consumer opinions on cashier-free stores and surveyed over 1,000 German consumers from urban and suburban areas (full methodology at the end of this article).
Highlights of the survey:
78% of consumers in urban or suburban areas are interested in cashierless shopping
49% would feel uncomfortable if the supermarket app were directly linked to their bank account
Almost every second person is afraid that their data will be hacked
What is a cashierless supermarket?
Cashierless stores are retail stores that do not have checkout staff or cash israel telegram data registers and instead use cameras and AI technology to optimize the shopping experience. "Cashierless" stores are a growing trend. More and more retailers are testing concepts for cashierless stores. Rewe has only recently started offering its customers in Cologne what is known as hybrid shopping: paying in the traditional way at the checkout or without a checkout process using "Pick&Go" .
Shoppers download an app before they can enter a store.
Customers then register via app or by scanning a QR code at a barrier at the entrance.
Shopping can begin and products can be placed in the shopping cart, backpack, bags, etc.
Cameras and sensors are used to register which products are taken from the shelves and which are put back again. This allows customers to simply pack up products and leave the store without having to queue at a checkout.
Billing then takes place via the app.
78% are interested in cashierless stores
The implementation of the concept is still very new in Germany. Only 5% of consumers from urban or suburban areas say that they have already shopped in a cashierless store.
Among consumers living in urban or suburban areas, 78% are interested in cashierless stores, of which 44% are very interested and 34% are somewhat interested.
