Many technical terms can be confusing right from the start, so we want to introduce three of the most important units of measurement:
Page view: a page viewed on your website.
Session: a number of pages viewed by a single user
. User: the same person visiting your website. This user can, of course, usa phone number data be responsible for multiple sessions.
Working with segments for the first time
To access the segments area, all you have to do is click on the "Add Segment" icon under Audience > Overview. This button can be found above every report. After clicking, the corresponding dashboard appears. On the left are various columns such as total traffic, segmentations that already exist in the system - for example, new users and organic traffic -, custom segmentation, shared segmentation, favorites and currently selected. If you already have what you want here, you only need to click to load it from the gallery. If you want to create a completely new segment, you have to click on "New Segment". If you find a good template among the existing ones that might be useful for the new segment, you can copy it and use it as a basis.
Practical example of organic traffic
Segmentation will be explained using the example of organic traffic. We'll copy the "Organic Traffic" segment to make things easier to get started. It's already selected as organic in the medium. There are now various options in the dashboard: The summary of this segment on the right shows the current size. This is updated whenever a new criterion is added or removed. On the left, however, additional categories can be added. To further break down traffic, these include demographic characteristics, technologies, behavior, the date of the first session, traffic sources, advanced e-commerce characteristics, conditions, and sequences. Some of these characteristics can be selected by clicking on the "Add Filter" link and selecting the respective content. A search field can also speed up the search process. In the example with organic traffic, for example, all users who came to the website via Google yesterday could be selected. The existing segment can be easily modified by adding the date.
