Advertising on Facebook - Standard Ad Example
Image 1. Examples of standard ads on Facebook
Standard ads can be targeted to any Facebook user in the Netherlands. However, standard ads only appear on the right side of the Facebook user's news feed. When using this type of ad, the advertiser can choose between two models to pay: cost per click (CPC) or cost per 1,000 impressions (CPM). This is also very reminiscent of Google Adwords.
In the third article in this series, I will delve further into the bidding and billing of ads on Facebook. Standard ads are also the only ad format on Facebook that can be purchased via real-time bidding networks such as AppNexus . Facebook recently launched the Facebook Exchange for this purpose .
2. Promoted posts
The second type of advertisements are the so-called promoted posts. These advertisements are also called page post ads in English . With these advertisements you can enlarge a message from your page – a post – as an advertisement. This advertisement also consists of 4 parts:
Title: maximum 25 characters (this is always the title of your Facebook page by default).
A text of up to 90 characters including spaces. Texts longer than that will be automatically truncated by Facebook.
In addition to text, this ad can contain a video, image, event, offer, link or poll .
If you target the page posts to Facebook users who are not yet fans, a Like button will appear below the advertisement, so that you can like the page directly from the advertisement.
The promoted posts can be targeted to your fans, your fans' friends, but also any other random user on Facebook who falls within your target group. However, this has recently led to a lot of protests from Facebook users, who suddenly started seeing posts in their news feed from pages they are not fans of at all.
The promoted posts are primarily intended to give the content on your pages more reach among your fans. And more reach also ultimately means more engagement . According to a recent study by Social Embassy, these promoted posts also have the desired effects. However, the effect is greatest among current fans of the page. In addition to more reach and engagement, these advertisements also generate a reasonable conversion to new fans because of the Like button under the advertisements.
