Since the Wall Street Journal blew the whistle on the accuracy of those tests in 2015, several documentaries have investigated what went wrong at Theranos. As much as Elizabeth Holmes’ story inspires Hollywood and can serve as a lesson to Silicon Valley, the “fake it till you make it” mantra is likely to continue to thrive. In the Californian valley, startup founders who exaggerate their abilities are more likely to succeed, without being caught red-handed, as Theranos was: “I bet you a lot of entrepreneurs watched the trial and thought, ‘Well, they probably did some of the things that Elizabeth Holmes is accused of doing,’” says Aron Solomon, legal director at Esquire Digital.


Chinese tech giant Alibaba is reportedly in talks with state-owned mint database Shanghai Media Group to sell its 30% stake in Weibo, China’s flagship social network. The microblogging site has been singled out by national regulators several times in the past for spreading “illegal” content . Greater state control over the platform would therefore be deemed necessary. Discussions are only in their early stages, but the objective would be clear: to limit the influence of large Chinese groups on the media landscape .
