How long should a meta description be?

The snippets displayed in the SERPs should be approximately 156 characters long, including spaces. Longer snippets will be truncated and not displayed in full. Therefore, the meta description should also only be 156 characters long, including spaces. Google actually calculates the display length of snippets based on pixels, which means that 156 characters would be approximately 500 pixels. However, this value has never been officially confirmed by Google... but it's used everywhere. If the snippet is longer than 156 characters, it doesn't affect the ranking, but it's unattractive for visitors, as they can't get a clear picture of the website's content and may prefer to choose a search result that exactly matches their search.
